Environment and Conservation Fund

The Environment and Conservation Fund (“ECF”) is a statutory trust fund established in June 1994 under the Environment and Conservation Fund Ordinance (Cap. 450) (“the Ordinance”). The Government also established the Environment and Conservation Fund Committee (“Committee”) under the Ordinance.

From its establishment to 2012, the ECF received six government injections totalling $1.735 billion. Later in June 2013, the Government injected an additional $5 billion into the ECF as seed money:

Applications from eligible local organisations (e.g. local bodies, community organisations, green groups, charitable organisations, school sponsoring bodies, tertiary institutions, primary and secondary schools, nurseries and kindergartens, etc.) are welcomed. The project must be non-profit making in nature.

Since 1994, the Woo Wheelock Green Fund (“WWGF”) has been supporting some of the ECF projects. Therefore, applications for support from the ECF may be considered for grants from both the WWGF and the ECF.

ECF - "Veg & Fruit, Feel So Good"

"ECF - Veg & Fruit, Feel So Good" is sponsored by the Environmental and Conservation Fund. Consumerism promotes continuous consumption, such as the excessive use of fresh flowers during Valentine's Day, leading to significant waste due to excessive packaging. This project advocates for "waste reduction at the source" by using fruit and vegetable arrangements as an environmentally friendly alternative. Fruit and vegetable bouquets not only convey emotions to loved ones but can also be used as ingredients for cooking, combining aesthetics with environmental consciousness.

The primary target audience of this project is families with children from kindergarten to primary school. Through various activities, we aim to engage families, led by fathers, to promote waste reduction at the source and raise awareness of low-carbon living. By integrating environmental awareness into family life, we aim to foster a green lifestyle.

"The Perfect Pairing of Vegetables and Fruits" is a student lecture that introduces students to the concept of waste reduction at the source and recycling through the use of fruits and vegetables in healthy and environmentally friendly ways.

"The Art of Fruit and Vegetable Bouquets" is a parent-child workshop that encourages fathers and children to create fruit and vegetable bouquets as a way to show love and appreciation to mothers. Fruit and vegetable bouquets can be used as cooking ingredients and as a thoughtful gift, serving a dual purpose.

"Dads' Low-Carbon Cooking" is a series of instructional cooking videos that feature different father-son or father-daughter duos preparing various low-carbon dishes. These videos are regularly released on DADs Network's YouTube channel, encouraging parent-child cooking activities.


"Say No to Wasted Fruits and Vegetables" is a guided tour of local markets to promote food waste recycling.

 

"The Challenges of Being a Farmer" is a farming experience activity that allows families to observe and experience Hong Kong's food waste situation and understand the difficulties involved in farming, fostering an appreciation for food.

Through activities such as choosing fruits and vegetables, reducing packaging, using environmentally friendly alternatives, and participating in recycling and distribution, we aim to instill the concept that "environmentalism starts with food, and waste reduction starts at the source." By encouraging parental and student involvement, strengthening environmental awareness, and cultivating green living habits.
